We’ve got something to shout about this week: An Electric Defender in South Africa!
Our client, David from Johannesburg, has recently finished installing an EV conversion kit into his beautifully restored and highly customised Defender 90. It’s a 55 kWh Tesla Model 3 Motor system built by my team in Sussex, UK, and shipped to South Africa.
David insisted on installing the system in his home garage (usually we hire a local workshop to do this), he assured me he had the skills, but would get help with the big bits. I absolutely love this photo of the little team that David assembled to help him lift the 320kg battery box into its new home under the bonnet.
Our rule generally is: if you have the skills and equipment to get your old engine and gearbox out, you have the skills and equipment to get our EV conversion kit in. It took David + friends two days to install the battery box and motor, and another two to do the little bits (power steering, electric handbrake, air-conditioning, etc).
Our kits truly are bolt-in and plug-in, especially now that we build the entire systems on our test chassis that I shared a couple of months ago. Shipping is also easy, at about £2,000, so we’re truly poised for Electric Land Rovers all around the world now.
